The entire Park La Brea community was saddened by the senseless loss of José Tomàs Mejia, a well-loved maintenance worker who was particularly respected by the residents of Tower 33, where he spent most of his time. 

Tomàs made amazing contributions to his communities. Aside from being beloved by PLB tenants, he was an active member of the SEIU USWW’s “Justice for Janitors” Executive Board, where he fought for the rights and safety of janitors, particularly those who work at night. He was also a peer-to-peer advocate in the Ya Basta Center, also known as a compadre, who fought against the patriarchy, sexual violence and domestic violence.

“He died as he lived, as a protector and hero,” said SEIU USWW  in an emailed statement. “Tomàs is survived by his wife and children. He was the sole provider for his family.”

Tomàs and his wife had recently purchased their first home. A Go Fund Me account has been set up to help the family pay funeral expenses and continue to cover the mortgage.
