Los Angeles may not have as complete a public transportation system as Tokyo, but bus, train, light rail and subway are available. You can get about the city and neighboring areas with a minimum of fuss and bother, and save the planet (not to mention your hard earned cash) by making use of these resources when appropriate.

The "official" way to access schedules and routes, including an interactive route planner, which some love, others hate. Try it out.

CAUTION: TRAFFIC LIGHT ALERT
As you may know, automated traffic signal safety cameras are being installed at a good many intersections.

But the system is faltering. Check out these articles:

Official site of the LAPD(From the horses mouth, so to speak.)

Going Bankrupt?  Good article on how the photo red light system works, and the financial problems of the company maintaining it.

OC Problems with their camera system.

Be warned that these cameras are mostly used to fine people who make a rolling right (not coming to a complete stop first) on red. California law is VERY SPECIFIC: You can make a right turn on red, when safe, but ONLY AFTER COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP.

These cameras really get the whole picture, your face, your license plates, the distance to the car behind you. They will be prepared to challenge any lame excuses.

FINES FOR VIOLATING RED LIGHTS ARE exceeding $400! Obey basic traffic regulations and you will not be photographed.

They are not interested in folks who are already in the intersection when the light turns red. The only interest is in cars entering
the intersection after the light turns red.
