7/2 – The Cat People (1982)
118 minutes – A remake of Val Lewton’s scarey and celebrated film noir, this time with Nastassja Kinski as the beguiling cat woman and Malcolm McDowell as her feline brother. Wonderful camera work but – note – the film has some nudity.
7/9 – The Illusionist (2006)
110 minutes – An award winning romantic thriller set in turn-of-the-century Vienna involving a magician (Edward Norton) who falls in love with a story-book princess (Jessica Biel) with ominous consequences that challenge all his prestidigitary skills.
7/16 – Blithe Spirit (1945)
96 minutes – Noel Coward’s comedy about a man (Rex Harrison) who has two wives, one of whom (Kay Hammond) is a ghost who ensconces herself in the home he shares with wife number two (Constance Cummings).
7/23 – Bay of Angels (1963)
79 minutes – “A magical whirling little film, a triumph of style” (THE NEW YORKER) directed by Jacques Demy and featuring the erotic Jeanne Moreau as a gambling lady who turns compulsion and luck into a kind of Sartrean existentialism. (In French with English subtitles)
7/30 – Elvira Madigan (1967)
90 minutes – A tale of romantic insanity set in the late 1890’s. Bo Widerberg directed this beautifully photographed film, artfully acted by Pia Degermark, as a circus performer and Thommy Berggren, as a handsome cavalry officer. The highly acclaimed musical score is adapted from Mozart’s Piano Concerto #21. (In Swedish with English subtitles)
