American Films

Saturdays at 2 pm

7/4 – No Movie –
Independence Day Holiday

7/11 – Music Box (1990)

126 minutes – “A courtroom melodrama with the pull and excitement of a thriller” (THE NEW YORKER) featuring Jessica Lang as a Chicago lawyer defending her steelworker father against deportation to Hungary where the Communist government intends to try him as a war criminal. It’s “An uncommonly lucid piece of story-telling” directed by film-master Costa-Gavras.

7/18 – Meet Me in St. Louis (1945)

113 minutes – A warm and cuddly musical directed by Vincente Minnelli starring Judy Garland, Margaret O’Brien, Mary Astor and Tom Drake. Set in St. Louis (naturally!) in the year 1903, this is a movie, sayeth the NEW YORK TIMES, “for those who would savor the enjoyment of innocent family merriment with the fragrance of dried rose petals.” In short, it’s nostalgia set to music and Judy’s at her best.

7/25 – Kiddies Matinee: Baby’s Day Out (1994)

99 minutes – This is a slap-stick comedy about Baby Bink who lives with his doting parents in a huge mansion which does not, however, guarantee him protection from three enterprising hoodlums who kidnap little Bink but have a harder time holding on to him than ever his parents did. Joe Mantegna stars. (But not as little Bink.)
